A Journey from Japanese Cultural Interest to Architectural Aspiration

Giovanna Luisa De Sousa Mota

I am pursuing an architecture degree at the Kanazawa Institute of Technology in Japan, driven by a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. My objective is to acquire international experience that will enhance my ability to contribute to strengthening the relations between Japan and Indonesia.

Why did you want to come to Japan?

As a child, I joined a Japanese club in school where I learned basic Japanese. In Junior High School, my interest in studying architecture abroad grew, and my parents encouraged me to explore Japan. I discovered that Japan and Indonesia share similarities in traditional architecture, which inspired me to research Japan’s urban development, particularly its effective city transformations as an island nation, similar to Indonesia.

What was the best part of your study abroad experience?

The best part was being exposed to an international environment. I met many people from different cultures and learned from their perspectives. The communication opportunities with teachers and classmates were invaluable. Sharing our culture and learning about theirs was an enriching and valuable experience.

How did you feel about the classes and curriculum?

Initially, the classes felt overwhelming because everything was new. The Japanese courses were intensive but effective, helping us gradually communicate in Japanese. The liberal arts classes, like etiquette, were fascinating because they taught us how to respect elders in a uniquely Japanese way, which is different from Indonesia. These lessons have been instrumental in my interactions here.

What were some of the most impressive events you experienced?

I was part of the art club, and the most memorable event was participating in a diversity-themed event at City Hall.

We created an interpretation of diversity, which was chaotic but fun. I also gave a speech in Japanese, which made people laugh, and created sculptures that still mean a lot to me.

Were there any aspects of Japanese culture or customs that surprised you?

Yes, I was surprised by Japan’s extensive use of cash and coins, whereas Indonesia is almost cashless. Additionally, the lack of public trash bins was unexpected, and I often carried my trash in my bag.

What were the challenges that you faced in your studies, particularly with Japanese? And what were your achievements?

In the first six months, I concentrated on studying for JLPT N3. This was challenging, primarily because of the vocabulary. However, discussing topics with my Japanese colleagues and teachers helped me improve and I passed the N3. I proceeded to focus on preparing for the N2 and writing essays in Japanese. With the help of teachers, I succeeded and got accepted into KIT.

Will you share with us what you’re currently studying and your future goals?

I am currently studying architecture and plan to specialize in urban design. After graduation, I aim to gain work experience in a company that deals with international relations between Indonesia and Japan. Eventually, I hope to pursue a master’s degree in America and work there for a few years before possibly returning to Indonesia.
